5 Tips to Go Boating with a Dog

Love water activities? Here’s how to take your dog with you.

Spring has finally come in Maryland. The weather is temperate and pleasant, and even on chillier days. When it’s spring, it’s time to think about spending more time outdoors again, potentially with your dog! In Maryland, boating is one popular activity that people and their pets enjoy, which usually begins in early April through early fall. Below are five tips to go boating with a dog happily.

1. Help Your Dog Get to Know the Water

Your dog should be familiar and comfortable with the water before you go ahead and launch your boat with your dog. Your dog should not be afraid of water. While your pet should ideally be comfortable with baths, it should also be okay with bodies of water. You could take your dog to a dog beach or park safely to test it out.

2. Know Your Dog’s Capabilities

If your dog doesn’t like the water, let your dog be. If your pet really doesn’t like going on a boat, then it will have to stay home. If your dog is okay with or loves the water, then you know you can take your dog on a boat with you.

3. Invest in a Dog Life Vest

Whether your dog can swim or not, it is best to invest in a dog life jacket. Rivers, creeks, and other bodies of water have currents, wildlife, and no lifeguards. Even natural swimmers can get tired, which is why it’s best to have your dog wear a life vest when it’s swimming or if it can’t swim.

4. Bring Provisions for Your Pet

If you have been out on the water before, you will know how easy it is to get thirsty and hungry. Bring provisions for your pet as well, with clean feeding and drinking bowls. If it’s a hot day with direct sunlight, invest in shade, eye protection, and sunscreen for dogs.

5. Bring All Other Travel/Outing Dog Supplies

All other supplies you would take with you when going out with your dog should be with you when you take your dog boating. Bring the dog leash, poop bags, and any other supplies you might need.
