Loss can hit people very differently, particularly when it comes to the loss of a pet. Some people might not be very affected, but others can feel it very deeply. No matter what you feel or how deeply, it’s okay to process it however you do. Not comparing yourself to others is just one tip to heal. How can you grieve the loss of a pet? It does get better. Take care of yourself by doing these things.

Maintain Your Routine

It is tempting to want to change your plans to grieve, and doing so could be helpful if you cannot function at the time. However, it is very helpful to maintain your routine. Continuing with your daily habits actually makes the grief less prominent.

Allow Yourself to Grieve

At the same time, you should not feel that you have to suppress your emotions or thoughts. Allow yourself to grieve as you need to, as acknowledging it will ultimately be healthier than blocking it out.

Talk to Others and Find Support As You Need

It can help to tell other people you trust about what you are going through. People are there to support each other. Thankfully, there are many resources out there, including support groups, chat rooms, books, and hotlines, as well as friends, family, and therapy.

Honor Your Pet’s Memory

A pet can be a wonderful part of someone’s life. A pet is something to celebrate! You can find ways to honor your pet’s memory, such as displaying photos, journaling memories, or making a memorial.

Keep Enjoying Life

Grief can cause people to overeat, stop eating, or neglect enjoyable activities. Take care of yourself; eat healthy, get physical exercise, and keep to your sleeping routine. Don’t limit it to that–keep enjoying life. Hang out with your friends and keep doing the activities you love most.

Don’t Rush the Process

Grief can take time. It’s okay to have good moments and not-so-great ones. Allow yourself to heal in your own way and at your own pace. Focus on good things, and, if you are ready, consider volunteering or fostering. For additional resources, Everhart Veterinary Medicine has got your back.
