June Is Adopt-a-Cat Month!

Every June, American Humane hosts Adopt-a-Cat Month. Here’s more about it!

Every June, American Humane sets the scene for Adopt-A-Cat Month. American Humane is an organization dedicated to helping animals in many different straits get the care they need. Adopt-A-Cat Month is a time to consider how you can help in the effort of caring for our country’s feline creatures.

Adopt-a-Cat Month

American Humane has existed for over a hundred years and has helped many animals, including war horses, get back on their feet. About 45 years ago, American Humane dedicated the month of June to the many cats that are without a home. June is the most prolific month of newborn kittens, which is also a time when many kittens go into animal shelters for adoption. Sadly, many cats do not get a home, which is why it is well worth visiting your local animal shelter to find your new pet. If you are thinking of adopting a cat or two, visit your local shelter to get started.

The Joys of Owning a Cat

A pet cat is an overall joy. One could safely say that owning a cat reduces stress, anxiety, and loneliness. Cats can have a calming effect, and their unique personalities can brighten one’s day. Some say that owning a cat can help improve one’s sleep, too. The decrease in stress and improvement of one’s sleep and mental well-being will improve one’s physical health, possibly reducing the risk of heart disease. There is nothing quite like owning a cat!

The Responsibilities of Owning a Cat

This is not to say that cats do not require any careful attention or care. Cats need what any creature needs: shelter, a healthy diet, grooming, and tender loving care. Maintaining the health of your pet entails addressing its physical and mental needs. You also want to have a way to identify it in case it gets lost. These ways include microchipping and putting a pet collar on it.

When getting your new cat, you will also want to prepare well. If you have other pets, take the recommended procedures in introducing them. Have a local vet picked out to be there in the event of an emergency. Everhart Veterinary Medicine in Baltimore, MD, is here to help your pet thrive.
