New Year Resolutions for Your Pet

New Year Resolutions for Your Pet

Start off the year on the right foot with these New Year resolutions for your pet.

The New Year is here! While almost half of the country celebrates the New Year with resolutions, your pet can join in the festivities as well. Everyone can benefit from some renewed life goals. Even if you do not make New Year resolutions, the start of the year is a poignant time to reevaluate your pet’s quality of life and dream big.

Eat Well

A surprising percentage of the pet population in the United States is overweight or obese. Owners may guess at the right amount per serving, but a mere estimate can lead to serious health problems. When your pet’s diet suffers, your pet could develop diabetes, osteoarthritis, or dermatological problems. Each pet’s ideal diet is unique; consult your veterinarian for how your pet’s daily cuisine could improve.

Exercise

Diet and exercise go hand-in-hand. Make it your resolution to exercise with your dog at least five days a week this year and for years to come. Exercise does not have to be grueling or tedious; even a simple walk around the neighborhood can be relaxing and invigorating for both you and your pet. The bounty of sight and smells outdoors will be mentally stimulating for him or her. You can also play games like frisbee or enter your pet into agility training.

Socialize

Just like people, animals benefit from socializing with their own kind too. If your pet is newer, you may want to start socialization between the pets of friends and families first. To get more outgoing, find a local dog park where your pet can frolic and meet other dogs.

Learn a New Trick

In life, there is always an opportunity to grow. Make this year exciting for your pet by teaching him a new trick. Start with simple commands like “stay” and “fetch.” Then move on to more advanced feats that would fascinate you both.

See the Vet

Most importantly, resolve to take your pet for an annual checkup at the vet. Even though it may be tempting to skip every now and then, it’s a protocol you will not regret. Your vet can catch symptoms before they worsen and can help keep your pet’s vaccinations up-to-date.
