What Happens If a Cat Bites You?

Everhart-cat-Dental-Care

Are cat bites dangerous? Are they nothing to worry about? Here’s what to know.

Cats can have all kinds of temperaments and quirks. Cats can be funny, curious, easily scared, and affectionate. Most animals will have some instinct to bite, and the same goes for cats. If you have heard about how dangerous cat bites can be and wonder how that might apply to you and your cat, you have come to the right place. What happens if a cat bites you?

Why Are Cat Bites a Concern?

Are cat bites a concern? They can be because of the infection that can result. Cats have teeth that can create small, deep puncture wounds that are hard to clean out. They also carry certain bacteria in their mouths that can cause serious infections in humans, including Pasteurella multocida.

When Are Cat Bites a Concern?

Not all cat bites are something to worry about. It depends on the severity of the bite and any signs of infection occurring in the following 48 hours. A cat bite that draws blood can result in the following symptoms:

  • Swelling
  • Warmth
  • Prolonged pain
  • Fever
  • Incessant bleeding

While you do not have to drive yourself to the hospital any time a cat bites you, you should see a doctor if you experience any of the above symptoms due to a cat bite. If a cat bites you and draws blood, clean the affected area immediately with soap and water, apply pressure to stop the bleeding, and apply a sterile bandage. Neosporin, alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide can slow the recovery process, so do not use them.

Reasons a Cat Might Bite You

A cat can bite for all kinds of reasons. It could bite to be playful, communicate, expend energy, or defend themselves. Do not think that a cat would bite you out of ill intent. Sometimes, a cat will seem to bite “out of nowhere,” completely unprovoked. We cannot always know the reasons a cat will bite.

How to Prevent a Cat from Biting You

However, we can understand cat body language, which can help with prevention. Know the signs that a cat feels agitated, such as whipping its tail or hissing. You can learn more as you spend time with your pet.

You should also give it cat toys rather than let it play with your hands and body alone. Training a cat can also help keep it from biting.
