Do Ferrets Make Good Pets?

Do Ferrets Make Good Pets?

Ferrets have several likable qualities that anyone might enjoy.

Along with mice, rats, guinea pigs, and hamsters, ferrets are exotic animals that have many perks to make their owners’ lives livelier. Although they have a bad reputation as aggressive animals and potentially through their family connection with weasels, ferrets make good pets for a substantial list of reasons. Although not all ferrets are legal in other states, Maryland allows them as pets as long as they are properly spayed or neutered and vaccinated.

1. Intelligent Animals

One reason ferrets make good pets is that they are highly intelligent creatures, similar to dogs and cats. For this reason, you can have a more meaningful relationship with your ferret and teach it a wide array of tricks. You can even train it to take a stroll on a leash and to use a litterbox.

2. Good for Small Spaces

While some creatures, like rabbits, may be small but require a larger space to roam comfortably, ferrets do not need much space to thrive. A decent-sized cage with multiple levels, hammocks, and hideaways is enough to keep the ferret content. One will need free range about the room daily, though, but ferret-proofing the place will keep your pet and belongings safe.

3. Easy to Feed

Ferrets, like cats, are carnivores. A healthy ferret diet consists mostly of protein and fat. Some owners will feed their ferrets with cat food, although one should avoid getting fish-flavored or fish-based cat food. Healthy ferret foods are easy to obtain as well. These animals like treats and variety in their menu too, so specifically-designed ferret treats or fresh produce like vegetables, fruit, or meat can make their day.

4. Peace and Quiet

Ferrets make good pets if you want to maintain peace and quiet in your household. Although known for their high energy, ferrets are very quiet too and sleep for about 18 hours per day! They are not nocturnal, but sleep the majority of the day just like cats do.

5. Highly Sociable

That being said, ferrets are indeed very social creatures and love to bond with their owners. More playtime equals more bonding. Ferrets do well in pairs, so owners often have more than one of them. If you are looking for a unique and intelligent little pet, a ferret or two may be your creature of choice.
