Going hiking with your pet this fall? Here’s how to get ready for the adventure.
Hiking is a wonderful way to get into nature with friends, family, or just with your pet dog. If you live in Maryland, there are plenty of trails around in the mountains, the Piedmont Plateau, and the beaches alike. If you want to go hiking with your dog, there are some things you should do before, during, and after you go. Have fun, but be prepared!
Check the Trail Rules
Not all hiking trails welcome dogs. Before you go, make sure that the hiking trail allows you to bring your dog. If it does allow dogs, make sure to follow any other rules, such as being on a leash, etc.
Prepare for the Trail
There is a number of things you can do to prepare well for your expedition. Before you go, check that your pet is in good health and up to date on vaccinations, preventative care, etc. Bring bottled water, a dog water bowl, dog treats or food, a canine first aid kit, and poop bags. Have your pet wear an ID collar and make sure it knows how to follow on a leash.
Trail Etiquette and Safety
When you are on the hiking trail, keep your pet under control and away from other dogs if hostility breaks out. Stay calm and take the lead when hiking with your pet. If your pet does its business, make sure to use a poop bag if necessary. For your pet’s health, do not let it drink stagnant water, and make sure the ground or pavement is cool enough for your dog’s paws. Know the signs of overheating in dogs and other health issues. Also, do not let your pet terrorize or kill wildlife.
Post-Trail Checkup
After the hike, check your pet’s paws for scratches, debris, or other issues, and check your pet’s fur for ticks, briars, etc. It is very worth giving your pet flea and tick prevention, which can come as oral or topical medication. Flea and tick prevention collars are also available, but not necessarily as effective. If your dog jumped in some water or mud, be sure to wash your pet well.
