Your pet can be cool and comfortable all summer with these tips!
Summer is a great time for hot dogs, but not hot pets. If you are starting to sweat, your pet dog likely feels the heat, too. Summer can be very hot and humid in Maryland, but you can find plenty of ways to keep your dog safe and comfortable even during risky heat waves. Here are a few sure ways to keep a dog cool in summer.
Keep Your Pet Indoors During Hot Weather
Keeping your pet indoors during the hottest parts of the day is a sure way to keep it in the shade, where it is cooler. Use your air conditioning and fans to keep the house at a comfortable temperature. If your home lacks sufficient air conditioning, you can also use the other ways to keep your pet cool in summer.
Never Keep Your Pet in a Car
When you are traveling with your pet dog, never keep it in a locked car, even on a cool day. The temperature in a car is much higher than the outdoor temperature. In summer, this heat becomes unbearable and ultimately fatal.
Walk During the Cool of the Day
Pavement can also become too hot to the touch in hot weather. It’s best to walk your dog during the cool of the day, in the early morning and evening. These times will be more comfortable for both you and your pet.
Give Your Pet Frozen Treats
Everyone loves to cool down in summer with their favorite frozen snack or dessert. Pet dogs have many options, from frozen pieces of unseasoned, cooked chicken to apples to commercial canine desserts.
Use Mist, a Cool Compress, or a Swimming Pool
Spraying your pet’s exposed areas with water mist, giving it a cooling vest or compress, or taking it for a swim are other ways to keep your dog cool in summer. Evaporative cooling can be powerfully relieving.
Provide Fresh, Cool Drinking Water
Like you, pet dogs need to stay hydrated. Keep cool, clean drinking water available at all times so your pet won’t risk getting lethargic or faint.
Provide a Cool Place to Sleep
Pet cooling beds are available for sale. If your home gets a little too hot in summer, a dog cooling bed could be the trick to give your pet sweet summer dreams.
