Need tips to help your pet relax around other dogs? Read these tips!
All canines, like people, benefit from being comfortable with socializing. Being able to handle and enjoy anything from one-on-one interactions to large crowds is healthy for anyone living in society. Socializing your dog should start as soon as you can, whether you have a puppy or an adult dog. Here are some tips on how to socialize dogs with other dogs.
Start with Playdates
If you are starting with a dog who has never socialized much before, such as a puppy or a rescue, you can start training your pet to socialize well through playdates with one other familiar dog. It could be the dog of a friend or family member.
Outings with Familiar Dogs
If you want to get out and about with other people, you could agree to bring all of your pet dogs on the trip together. You are in a public setting and with one or more other pet dogs that your pet can interact with.
Keep It Gradual
If your pet has never socialized before outside of their littermates, then it’s best to socialize it gradually. Start small and grow from there, beginning with pets of people you know. If your pet exhibits any fear or aggression when meeting a new dog, keep them separate and try the introduction again. When your dog does well, reward your pet with affection or treats. If multiple dogs are present, make sure it’s okay for all of them to receive treats.
Read Your Dog’s Body Language
You should not force your dog to interact with other dogs, nor keep the interactions too long or too short. Your pet should be able to get to know the other long enough for familiarity to set in, but not so long that exhaustion sets in. Be aware and responsive to your pet’s needs.
Dog Parks and Other High Traffic Areas
The dog park, dog daycare, and dog training school are all other ways your pet can get comfortable with socializing with other dogs. However, it’s best not to jump into this level of socialization until after your pet is comfortable with familiar dogs and other dogs in public.
