How often should you bathe your dog after a summer swim? See here!
Maryland has many opportunities for water-loving dogs to go for a swim with their people and dog friends, whether at a public park or in a home swimming pool. If you have a dog that loves to swim, or are thinking of getting one, the question “Should you bathe your dog after swimming?” is a natural one. Here’s how to care for your pet post-swim.
To Bathe or Not to Bathe Your Dog After a Swim
The Type of Swimming Water
There isn’t exactly a straightforward answer; it depends on a few factors. One is the type of water your dog was swimming in. Chlorine and saltwater can be corrosive to your pet’s fur and skin; you will want to rinse it off at a minimum. If the water contains mud, algae, and other debris, you will definitely want to remove it so your pet stays clean and healthy.
The Frequency and Length of the Swim
If your pet only dipped in the water for a little while, any chlorine or salt will not have much time to build up on your pet’s skin and fur. On the other hand, if your pet goes swimming multiple days per week or for long periods, it’s safe to bathe your dog after every swim in a way that does not deplete your pet of its natural oils.
The Dog’s Skin and Fur Type
If your dog has sensitive skin, it could develop rashes or infections if the pool water or natural water is not washed off. Dogs with long-haired coats can be more likely to trap contaminants and develop tangles and mats as well, meaning they could need more rigorous post-swim care.
Tips on Bathing Your Dog Post-Swim
- Remove any swimming gear from your pet after swimming; don’t allow wet gear like harnesses to dry on your wet dog.
- Use a shampoo and conditioner designed for canines specifically.
- Bathe your pet in lukewarm water; hot water can dry out the coat and skin.
- Use an absorbent towel to wipe down your dog after a bath.
- Wipe your dog’s ear canals to prevent infection, avoiding going too deep.
- If your dog displays any symptoms of illness after a swim, call your local vet.
